Why I Don’t Recommend PoolRX
—Even Though It Works

When we take on a new client, around 90% already have a PoolRX pod sitting in their pump basket. Why is it so popular? Simple: because it works. So, if it works, why am I opposed to it?
The problem with PoolRX isn’t that it doesn’t do what it claims—it’s that it often becomes a band-aid solution for deeper issues, and when misused (which is common), it can lead to serious problems.
Let’s break it down.
🩹1. It Doesn't Solve the Root Cause
PoolRX helps suppress algae growth by releasing copper-based algaecide into your pool water. However, algae is a symptom, not the root cause. Phosphates, poor circulation, inconsistent sanitation, high stabilizer levels, nitrates, and other issues are often the real culprits. If you don’t address these underlying issues, the algae will keep coming back—no matter how many pods you drop in.

💰2. It’s Overpriced
At the time of writing, a PoolRX unit for an average 12,000-gallon pool costs around $80. For comparison, we charge our clients under $6 for the same volume of algaecide in liquid form—applied professionally and as needed. That's a huge price difference for the same result (or better).
✳️3. Risk of Staining and Discoloration
Yes, PoolRX is a safe and effective product—when used exactly as directed. But most people don’t follow the instructions. They just drop the pod in and hope for the best.
What’s the risk? Improper use can lead to:
-
Unsightly stains on your pool plaster
-
Discolored water (usually a green or bluish tint)
-
Damage to pool surfaces over time
☣️4. It Can Create Unsafe Water Conditions
Copper is the active ingredient in PoolRX, and while small amounts are safe, high copper levels are not. If you’re not regularly testing your pool water for copper, or you’re simply replacing the pod every few months without balancing levels first, you’re risking:
-
Copper toxicity
-
Heavy metal buildup
-
Health issues, especially for kids or frequent swimmers
🤔Final Thoughts: Work With a Professional Instead
At the end of the day, the best way to keep your pool clean, safe, and algae-free is to work with a professional. Here at POOL NERDS we:
-
Regularly test for copper, phosphates, nitrates, and more
-
Use cost-effective treatments only when needed
-
Focus on solving the real problems, not just the symptoms
PoolRX works—but it’s not a magic fix. Let us help you do it the right way.
